Despite rising unemployment, a large number of retail and service jobs are expected to be created in the UK in 2012, the year of the London Olympics. Notable examples are:

Asda, the supermarket chain, has said it will invest over £500 million in the UK in 2012, creating up to 5,000 jobs.

McDonalds, the fast-food chain will create 2,300 jobs in 2012. The new jobs are needed as some outlets move to 24-hour opening and 15 new restaurants open. McDonald has seen its business grow as Britain’s recession has made people look to eat out for less money.

Subway, the fast-food chain is going to create 6,000 jobs in the UK and Ireland between 2012 and 2015, opening 600 new outlets – this will bring the number of Subways operating in the UK up to about 2,000.

Travelodge is to create over a thousand new jobs at 41 newly opening hotels in the UK this year. Locations include Bradford, Chester, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London, and Sunderland. The budget hotel chain will be recruiting managers, bar staff, cleaners housekeepers, and receptionists. It will also be seeking to employ 120 new apprentices on its junior management programme.

People from throughout the EU and on working holidays from other countries will be eligible for many of these jobs.
